Gone are the days of invasive surgery and multiple days in the hospital. Today we can perform an in-office procedure or minimally invasive surgery, and you can relax at home the same evening.

Since sterilization is permanent, you and your spouse or partner should be in agreement before committing to the procedure. Either the male or female partner can opt for a sterilization procedure. For women, we perform tubal occlusion, closing off the fallopian tubes so that egg and sperm cannot meet in the Fallopian tubes. For men, sterilization is done via a vasectomy. Permanent Sterilization Options for Women

Tubal Ligation: Often called postpartum sterilization, the procedure is associated with childbirth and done while the uterus is still swollen. For women undergoing a cesarean section, their tubes are sealed off immediately after the baby is born and before the incision is closed. Tubal Ligation with Laparoscopy: Our ObGyns insert a laparoscope through a small incision near the navel after “inflating” the area with gas. They locate the fallopian tubes and may insert another instrument through a second incision to close the tubes with bands, clips or special thread, or seal them with an electric current. An outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, the entire process takes two to four hours and is effective immediately. Patients should plan to have someone drive them home.

What Happens Next?

It is important to use contraception for several months after most procedures to ensure that the fallopian tubes are effectively blocked, or that there is no longer sperm in men’s semen. As with all female sterilization procedures, there is a minimal risk of an ectopic pregnancy. Keep in mind that sterilization does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including human-acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A condom is required if this is a concern.
