Preventive care is the primary goal of the annual well woman exam
The annual well woman exam is an important part of every woman’s healthcare plan. Our Grapevine and Alliance obgyns see women each year to determine if there are any medical problems that need treatment now and to help prevent problems in the future.
What to expect during an annual well woman exam
The annual well woman exam begins with a discussion of your family and medical history. Our physicians need to have accurate information so that they can provide you with the best individualized healthcare.
During most exams, you can expect to have your height and weight checked and blood pressure taken. You will also have a physical examination, which usually includes a breast exam, a pelvic exam and various health screenings, depending on your age.
During the annual well woman exam, our Grapevine and Alliance obgyns also discuss vaccinations that you may need, including the flu vaccine and the HPV vaccine.
Cancer screening and prevention are part of annual wellness
Annual breast exams, as well as annual mammograms for women 40 and older, or younger women with risk factors, are an important part of breast cancer prevention. Our physicians follow the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Pap guidelines, which do not recommend annual Pap smears. Instead, most women require co-testing every five years, which includes a Pap smear and HPV screening. During the annual well woman exam, our physicians also talk to women age 50 and older about the need for colon cancer screening.
Our physicians address many physical and mental health issues during the visit
The annual well woman exam is not just a time for physical examinations, vaccines and screenings. It’s also a time for our Grapevine and Alliance obgyns to talk about many important issues that affect overall health and wellbeing.
- Depression and stress
- Birth control options
- Osteoporosis and bone density testing
- Sexual health
- Menopause
- Menstruation problems
- Weight management
- Preconception counseling
