At Women’s Integrated Healthcare, we offer comprehensive care for women, including procedures such as hysterectomies. Our doctors advocate minimally invasive treatment options whenever possible, and utilize leading edge therapies when surgery such as a hysterectomy becomes necessary.

An overview of basic female anatomy

The female reproductive system includes your fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina and uterus. Generally, these organs work together throughout a woman’s life. Although our doctors would prefer to leave this system intact, patients may develop medical issues such as fibroids, chronic pain or irregular bleeding, which warrant removal of the uterus. This procedure is known as a hysterectomy.

Understanding reproductive system disorders

When patients experience excessive bleeding or chronic pelvic pain, our Grapevine and Fort Worth ObGyns will perform a complete evaluation to identify the cause of the problem. In certain cases, your physician may determine that a hysterectomy is the best treatment option. Your ObGyn will review the findings of the evaluation and thoroughly explain these recommendations. Often, patients require this procedure because of the following issues:

  • Cancer in the reproductive organs
  • Fibroids growing in or on the uterine wall
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine prolapse creating urinary and bowel issues
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Reviewing surgical treatment options

Depending on your overall health and the reason for your hysterectomy, several options exist for this procedure, including:

  • Abdominal hysterectomy
  • Vaginal hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy
  • Robotic-assisted hysterectomy

Whenever possible, our doctors will perform an innovative single site hysterectomy. In this case, your doctor will make one incision during the surgery, usually near your belly button.

How long does it take to recover from a hysterectomy?

For most patients, this type of hysterectomy typically results in reduced scarring, less bleeding and a faster recovery time. Most women recover fully within six to eight weeks.

What to expect with a hysterectomy

Usually, patients will spend one to two days in the hospital following laparoscopic hysterectomy, and less time with a robotic hysterectomy surgery.

Our ObGyns recommend plenty of rest, no physical exertion, reduced activity levels and no sexual intercourse for six weeks. Your total recovery will take four to six weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery and your body’s healing process.

What happens to your body when you have a hysterectomy?

Many women report a loss of sex drive after a hysterectomy. This can happen since hysterectomy removes ovaries which are responsible for the production of estrogen and libido. However, many women do not experience sexual problems after a hysterectomy. For more information, talk to your doctor.
