Our Grapevine ObGyns are highly trained in the latest surgical options for hysterectomy

Advances in gynecologic surgery have changed what it means to have a hysterectomy. Hearing the news that you need a hysterectomy may conjure up fear or anxiety and a lot of questions. You wonder what your surgical options for hysterectomy are and how long you will have to recover.

Our Women’s Integrated Healthcare physicians have studied extensively in the most advanced techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic surgery for hysterectomy, and can recommend the most appropriate option for you.

Why a hysterectomy?

When other treatments have failed, hysterectomy may be the answer for conditions such as severe pelvic pain, fibroids, abnormal or heavy bleeding, and pelvic organ prolapse. It also may be indicated for cancer treatment.

Hysterectomy involves removal of a woman’s uterus, or “womb,” where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant. The gynecologic surgeon typically removes the entire uterus, and sometimes also the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Our all-female ObGyn team understands the concerns you might have and will spend the appropriate time with you to make the most informed decisions.

Surgical options hysterectomy provided by our Grapevine ObGyns

Hysterectomy can be done through the abdomen in open surgery, via the vagina, laparoscopically or robotically. Our Grapevine ObGyns perform a single-site hysterectomy whenever possible, using a single incision to reduce scarring and bleeding and hasten recovery time.

A total hysterectomy means removal of the uterus and cervix. A supracervical (or partial) hysterectomy leaves the cervix in place. A radical hysterectomy involves removing the uterus and surrounding structures and may be indicated if the physician suspects or diagnoses cancer.

Our Grapevine ObGyns have studied the most advanced techniques to perform these hysterectomy procedures:

  • Abdominal: The surgeon removes the uterus through an incision in the lower abdomen. Abdominal hysterectomy can be performed even if the woman has adhesions (scar tissue) or a large uterus. It may present greater risk of complications and require a longer hospital stay and recovery.
  • Vaginal: Vaginal hysterectomy does not involve an incision because the physician removes the uterus through the vagina. Not all women are candidates for this surgery, but it can mean fewer complications and quicker recovery.
  • Laparoscopic or robotic: This hysterectomy requires only 1-3, half-inch incisions in the abdomen and generally results in less pain and a shorter hospital stay. The surgeon views the pelvic organs with a laparoscope, then removes the uterus with other surgical instruments and small, separate incisions. Women’s Integrated Healthcare offers the da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery, a minimally invasive technique that generally has fewer complications.
